Switching from COD/BOD5 to TOC: An Environmental and a Business Case
To ensure discharge effluent limits are met, wastewater treatment plants need to monitor the level of organic pollution remaining after completed treatment. Often, this is done via laboratory tests that measure the biological (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). However, environmental agencies across the globe are transitioning towards a more accurate and faster measure of organic pollution – namely total organic carbon (TOC). TOC can be measured using a fully automated setup without the use of hazardous chemicals, resulting in lower costs, higher throughput, and less manpower, while requiring less lab space.
Find out more about this increasingly important topic and download our case study. Here, the cost associated with COD tests is compared to the cost of TOC analysis assuming sample throughputs of a typical industrial quality control laboratory.
