DIN EN 1484 Water analysis – Guidelines for the Determination of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC)

The DIN EN 15936 standard concerns the measurement of total organic carbon (TOC) in sludge, treated biowaste, soils and waste. These technical regulations are particularly applicable to solids containing more than 0.1% carbon by dry mass. Two possible TOC determination methods are defined. The indirect method (so-called differential method) specifies combustion of the total carbon (TC) for TC determination and acid treatment of a second sample aliquot for the determination of total inorganic carbon (TIC). The direct method describes acid treatment of the sample in order to remove existing inorganic carbon and then to directly detect the TOC value by combustion of the pre-treated sample. The CO2 released during combustion or reaction with the acid is quantified by non-dispersive infrared spectrometry or other suitable detection methods.

DIN EN 15936 is among the most important regulations in solids analysis. It allows for standardized assays of the organic carbon content in soil samples. The standard is mainly used in environmental analysis and allows for quality of analysis of soils and solid waste. The organic carbon in soil can come either from natural sources or from agricultural or industrial contamination, such as waste or over-fertilization. The TOC value has a crucial impact on soil quality, affecting the fertility and toxicity of the soil, among other things. Regular monitoring of total organic carbon is therefore in the interests of agricultural businesses, environmentalists and waste management stakeholders.

DIN EN 15936 defines in detail the process for the indirect and the direct method of TOC determination. In this context, the standard addresses the reagents used, sample pre-treatment, calibration as well as calculation of the results.
